Papago Golf Course
According to General Manager, Daryl Crawford, Papago has an amazing legacy since opening in 1963 - earning Top 100 Public Course honors for decades, as well as playing host to the U.S. Amateur Public Links National Championship, and a regular qualifying course for the Phoenix Open.
Designed by famous golf course architect William Francis “Billy” Bell, Papago Golf Course opened for play in 1963. With more than 200 golf course designs under his belt, including Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California, Bell used Papago’s natural topography to accentuate the gently rolling terrain found throughout the golf course. The routing showcases the stunning views of the Papago Buttes, Camelback Mountain, South Mountain and the downtown Phoenix skyline.
The par-72 layout now includes four sets of tee boxes and will play from 5,404 yards to 7,333 yards, with a USGA course rating of 74.8 and slope rating of 129 from the back tees. Papago Golf Course has been chosen as the future home of the men’s and women’s Arizona State University golf teams.
John Philbeck, a guest at the Magnuson Hotel Papago Inn, had this to say about Papago Golf Course:
Arriving at this oasis one is immediately struck by the incredible and ancient beauty of the imposing, cactus infused mountain rising to the majestic blue skies on the east end of the property. The lush grass of the driving range is oriented directly into the base of this natural wonder. It was almost impressive enough to distract my focus and forego the ritual clubbing of innocent range balls while disgorging formidable strips of sod from the tee area. I believe most of the damage I inflicted has since been repaired.
